Grenoble, a city for students

Grenoble is located in the South-East of France, three hours away from Paris by train and three hours away from the Mediterranean Sea by car.

The campus is located in the heart of an exceptional natural site, at the junction of three valleys leading respectively to Switzerland, Italy and the Rhone valley. It is surrounded by three mountain ranges - Belledonne, the Chartreuse and the Vercors - with summits reaching more than 4,000 m and several wilderness conservation areas. These unique surroundings make Grenoble and its region a playground for all kinds of sports - from water sports and hiking to rock climbing and skiing - all year round.

With 1 habitant out of 5 being a student, Grenoble is ranked the 1st city in France for studying by le Journal de l'Étudiant. It is a lively city with a diverse cultural offering, including museums, concert venues, theaters, as well as jazz, music and theater festivals.

Many leading international companies have chosen to base their research centers in this Alpine furrow to benefit from its unique cultural and scientific environment. HP, Xerox, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Pechiney, Alstom Hydro, Air Liquide, Orange labs, Bull, Lafarge, Vicat, bioMérieux are among them, not to mention leaders in microelectronics and nano-technologies such as ST Microelectronics, Soitec, etc.

Grenoble-Isère is known today as one of the main centers of innovation in the world, right along Eindhoven, San Diego, San Francisco and Malmo (it was elected 5th more inventive city in the world in 2013 by Forbes magazine).

The University Grenoble Alpes (UGA) is an attractive university for international students, and more than 45% of its 3,700 PhD students come from abroad. To help international students to prepare their stay in Grenoble, consult this UGA website page.
